Indexing

I write indexes with the reader in mind. I read every word of your book, and I make sure that all relevant information is present in the index and organized in a way that is easy to understand and navigate.

I have extensive experience indexing a wide range of titles in the humanities and social sciences. I wrote my first index in 2011 and have since indexed over six hundred books.

I have particular expertise and interest in Asian studies, biography and memoir, history, Indigenous/Native American studies, political science, and religious studies.

I index both academic books for a scholarly audience and trade books for a general audience.

I have won three awards for my indexes. In 2025, I won the ASI Indexing Award, from the American Society for Indexing, for my index for Dialectics of the Big Bang and the Absolute Existence of the Multiverseby Gregory Phipps (University of Alberta Press, 2024). In 2021, I won the Ewart-Daveluy Award, from the Indexing Society of Canada/Société canadienne d’indexation, for my index for The Shield of Psalmic Prayer: Reflections on Translating, Interpreting, and Praying the Psalter, by Donald Sheehan (Ancient Faith Publishing, 2020). And in 2014, I won the inaugural Purple Pen Award for Best New Indexer, from the Institute of Certified Indexers, for my index for Strange Visitors: Documents in the History of Indigenous and Settler Relations in Canada from 1876, edited by Keith D. Smith (University of Toronto Press, 2014).

  • I am absolutely delighted with the indexing work Stephen did for my book. He produced an exceptionally comprehensive and thoughtful index which will greatly enhance the usefulness of the book for researchers. I can strongly recommend Stephen as a truly outstanding indexer.
