My love for books and writing drew me into publishing. As a kid, the library was my favorite place to hang out. In university, I completed a double major in political science and creative writing. Naturally, I was teased about one day becoming a political speech writer.
My interest, however, lay in stories and in understanding the world. So instead of politics, I sought and landed jobs in publishing.
Indexing
I discovered indexing while working in-house at UBC Press. I was captivated by the puzzle of organizing information in a way that is easily accessible to readers. At my next job, at Harbour Publishing, I asked if I could try writing an index, and was soon hooked. I left Harbour Publishing in 2012 and have been freelancing ever since.
Writing
Writing has always been a passion of mine. I find the world makes more sense through carefully crafted prose. In 2023 I published an introduction to indexing, Book Indexing: A Step-by-Step Guide. I also write the Indexing Matters newsletter, contribute to the indexing journals The Indexer and Key Words, and try my hand writing science fiction and mysteries.
When I am not indexing or writing you can find me away from the computer nose-deep in a novel, puttering around the house, or going outside for a walk or run. I grew up in Taiwan, and now live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
