Thanks, Joanne! Being a detective is a great way to think about indexing. It does require a lot of curiosity and thinking beyond the book.

Fellow Indexer here. My biggest concern is that on its first round of answers, it told you that you an index might be written for fiction! That’s pretty out there. ?
I think, on reading the continued efforts the AI made to get to the bottom of what makes a good index it never really got there. Because we indexers know those two secret rules and we’ll never tell ?
But seriously, great to find your article. I keep wondering when my work is going to suddenly stop as the publishers get a new tool that does it for them cheaper and faster (but not as friendly I’m sure). I personally find indexing to be a highly creative job, and I’m also a writer and creative entrepreneur. It’s not the boring, detail-driven task people think it is. At least, not the way I approach it. It’s more like being a detective, thinking backwards about what your index user might be looking up. Often it has less to do with what’s in the actual book and more about thinking around the subject. Good luck AI ? I’m excited to see you crack it!
